  1. Please excuse my ignorance...can you explain to me the difference between a relaxer and a perm? I do not use either but it would still be nice to know for future reference.

  2. Yes, I would be happy to explain the difference. I would like to say that this is probably one of the most important pieces of info my sis in law gave me when I moved out of town & it was time to take care of my own hair. She is adamant about never using a box perm & kind of explained it like this. This is from memory..so you may want to look this up if my explanation is confusing.
I also would like to say, that thanks to supply and demand, relaxers are more available and in most cases cost the same and/or are less than the price of a box perm.
I can go into pricing and best products later at your request.
I first want to clarify, if a person decides to use a perm and/or relaxer on their hair, neither is "healthy" for your hair because they both involve chemicals, just different kinds of chemicals and I will now explain the difference. :D
***PERM***: A No Lye Relaxer is the "box perm kit" that is mixed together and applied to the hair. It creates more of a "curl" or "wave to the hair". If you or someone you know has ever used a perm most women notice it more when they have new growth, the "waves" are small short waves of hair, which most women believe is their natural hair texture. Perms take away the porosity (elasticity, which I feel is the actual true growth of the hair). It is blocking the hair's "natural absorption".
Think of the wave as being "permanent"
S/N:(Since you are natural, ask or think about someone who has gone from box perm to natural hair and they will see the difference in their natural hair vs the permed wave or curl.
In most cases, hair breaks more with a perm. It is becomes drier and if living in a hot climate or windy climate, the hair will be even more damaged.
S/N: To help with your hair's porosity, you can buy POROSITY CONTROL SHAMPOOS/CONDITIONERS MADE BY ROUX at any MID-K and/or most beauty supplies.
**RELAXER**: A Lye Relaxer is a professional relaxer that straightens the hair (i.e. "relax the curl").
S/N:A relaxer's goal is to straighten the hair, to loosen or remove the curl in the hair.
S/N: Because of an increase in demand, it is now more available to the general public for use. Relaxers provide a base for your scalp. The "base" used before a relaxer is more of a protectant from the chemicals of the relaxer.
S/N: both should be followed according to the directions, as they both can cause, breakage and even alopecia if misapplied.
I hope this info was useful! Sorry about the delay in responding.
